Describing or explaining the rivalry between the Colorado Avalanche and the Detroit Red Wings in the late 1990’s is completely unnecessary, we are all familiar with the countless thrilling games, the grueling battles for the right to move on to the Stanley Cup Finals, the extremely talented players on both teams, the list goes on and on.

In what could be called the greatest rivalry in not only hockey, but sports history, the late 90’s were ruled by these two teams. When the calender shifted towards the 2000’s, however, only the Wings maintained their form as the Avs have struggled in recent years.

But with the recent arrival of multiple budding stars the Avalanche are looking like a team poised to return to the top of the West. For years Hockeytown has been dying for another cut throat rivalry, and it seems like we are on the cusp of getting just that.

The Avalanche (8-6-1) are better than their record depicts, and with players like Matt Duchene, Chris Stewart and Paul Stastny they are capable of stealing any game, any night, from any team.

The Wings continue to play great hockey and boast a 10-3-1 record through 14 games. Recent spectacular play from Nicklas Lidstrom (big surprise) along the blue line coupled by a unit of forwards who have been dominant at most times, spearheaded by red-hot Danny Cleary, has helped the Wings coast through the early parts of this season.

Game starts at 7:00 and can be seen on Fox Sports Detroit.
