Todd Bertuzzi back...Red Wing lifer?

Good news Red Wing fans…Big Bert is back for at least 2 years. Bertuzzi inked a 2 year deal worth $2.25 million the first year and $1.625 million the second.  He tallied 44 points this season averaging just over half a point per game (0.54). What was pleasantly surprising was that in 12 playoff games he tallied 11 points or nearly a point every game (0.92).  He was also one of only three players to play all 82 games in the regular season and he played every playoff game.  Not bad for a guy who underwent back surgery a few years ago eh?

Quotes and analysis after the break…

Here’s what Holland had to say about resigning Bertuzzi…

Mike Babcock and I were really happy with what Bert brought to the team. He brought a nice physical dimension, worked hard at being in front of the net and was a good fit in the locker room.

Here’s what Bertuzzi had to say about 2 more years in motown…

Everything just came together in Detroit. I think coaching was a big part of it. It took me and Babs a little while for him to trust me, and for me to learn to play at both ends of the ice. My back took so long to get better, so for me to play all 82 games was pretty neat. I felt like for the first time in a long time, I could go out and contribute the way I wanted to. It’s just such a great feeling to be coming back. I think we have a really good chance next year. It’s such an unbelievable group of guys there — everyone gets along, and no one there is about themselves. It’s a pretty neat situation to be in. I loved every minute of being there the first time around, and feel fortunate I got a second chance at it. And now I get to finish off my career there.

One has to wonder if both sides were being completely truthful in their comments of if they’re just playing nice to the media.  If Todd was so happy in Detroit why the hold out?  Was it for more money or was Holland the one on the fence?  There are some Red Wing fans that weren’t too happy with Bertuzzi last year and are probably not thrilled with his new deal, but I think this is good news.  He was healthy, he provided a big physical presence, he contributed on the score sheet, and for what he brings to the table I think the $3.8 million contract is a good deal.  I was hoping we could sign him for around $3.0 million over 2 years, but Holland still has the cap space to make some magic happen.
