Ilari Filppula

Skating is a challenge for the newest Red Wing

This morning Ansar Khan reported that the Red Wings have signed Ilari Filppula (Valtteri’s older brother) to a one year deal for $500k.  He will spend his time between Detroit and Grand Rapids where upper management will see if he has the stones to play in the best league in the world.  My favorite part of the article was Jim Nill’s quote…

He has really good puck skills. He’s a good playmaker, not as good a skater as (Valtteri). Skating is his biggest challenge. We’re hoping it’s not as big an issue because of his hockey sense and playing on smaller ice.

I get a warm and fuzzy feeling when we sign a guy where skating is his biggest challenge.  I would like to see another Datsyukesque player in the lineup, but I sure hope Nill’s quote was exagerrated.  It would be cool if we has Filppula twins much like Vancouver has the Sedins.  I don’t think our pair will put up the same numbers in 2011, but once Ilari learns to skate who knows what the twins will do.

Some videos after the break…
