The word is not written in stone just yet, but we all know it…Chris Chelios will retire this year. He’s too old to be competitive at the NHL level anymore, playing in the AHL is a slap in the face, and he wants to spend time with his kids.
After a decade in Detroit and with 2 restaurants, one in Detroit and another in Dearborn, Chelios wants to make the motor city home. His son has given Michigan State a verbal commitment to play hockey and his daughter is entering her senior year in high school.
Hockey’s been in my life so long, I can’t see myself not being in hockey the rest of my life. I think there’s a position somewhere for me in hockey. If this is the end, I’ve prepared myself for it.
Chelios is hoping to become a Red Wing again in some capacity. The Vice President position is empty and we all know Ken Holland isn’t interested. Could the timing be any more perfect? Chelios may be a pretty good candidate to fill Yzerman’s vacancy. He’s been playing hockey since the puck was invented, he’s opened 4 restaurants, and I see him staying for the long haul.
