Friday Update: 6/4

This is what happened this week…

Nicklas Lidstrom was signed to a 1 year deal worth $6.2 million.  It’s great he is coming back, but I don’t like the terms.  Yeah he’s coming back and a lot of us were wondering dreading what we would do without him, but a 1 year contract puts us in the same boat next summer and at a price tag of over $6 million Ken Holland’s ability to go out and sign a big name free agent is restricted.

Tomas Holmstrom was signed to a $3.75 million deal over 2 years.  I’m glad he’s coming back because I would rather have him standing in front of their goalie than our goalie.  His playing style fits in very well with our specialty teams and he’s just a big guy that is hard to move.  I think he’ll be a Red Wing lifer and I just hope he can stay healthy.

For my Saskatchewan readers, July 17th is unofficially dubbed “Mike Babcock Day” for a fund raising benefit for the Children’s Hospital Foundation.  On a separate note, I celebrate Steve Yzerman Day every year with a cake…everyone at my employer loves Steve Yzerman Day!

Ken Holland wants to change how games are decided in overtime.  He’s not a big fan of the shootout and wants to see the overtime period extended or the players reduced.  I’m not a big fan of reducing the players from 4v4 to 3v3, but a longer OT period may be a viable option.  I don’t necessarily agree that a shootout turns a team sport into an individual skills competition, but I do agree that shootouts are exciting for the fans.  There is also the fact that it is the regular season, they play 82 games, and games shouldn’t last too long when they play every other night and fly across the country on road trips.

In baseball news the Tigers were denied a perfect game because the official made a shitty call.  Red Wings fans have no idea what that feels like do we? I bring this up for the sole reason to point out that I think instant replay should be used in every sport and that coaches (like in football) should be able to challenge a call.  In hockey I’d like to see the coach able to challenge a penalty.  Did the puck hit the glass in the defensive zone that resulted in a delay of game penalty that cost a team an OT loss?

Another reason why I hate Chris Pronger…stealing game pucksDear Mr. Holland, please DO NOT sign this douche under any circumstances!

And to make your Friday more enjoyable, here’s a quiz.
