The rumor that Yzerman may be leaving Motown for sunny weather, sandy beaches, and a general manager’s position in Tampa Bay may have some merit says George Malik.
Stevie possesses many qualities that are attractive to struggling organizations looking to rebuild:
- Career: His career in the NHL and as one of the youngest Captains in history shows he knows how to lead and motivate players. He played for 23 years and led the Wings to 3 Stanley Cups.
- Involvement: He is intimately involved with every facet of operations working next to Ken Holland, Jim Nill, and Ryan Martin. He is involved with every aspect of the team from scouting to trading.
- Olympics: He managed Team Canada and they won the gold on home ice. He had a smorgasbord of elite athletes to pick from for a world wide tournament to win something Canucks prize more than snow…a gold medal in hockey.
Stevie Y is my all time favorite player, his number was the first jersey I bought, and I have his “Last Step” picture prominently displayed in my house. I would hate to see him leave the city that he loves and that loves him. If the rumors turn out to be true, I hope the Red Wing faithful bid him farewell with cheers and a “thank you”…not boos and “good riddance”.
