A collective sigh of relief

AUTHOR: | IN: Red Wings | COMMENTS: None Yet

On the way back from an excursion for a possible new cell phone and a birthday gift for a friend’s seven year old, I told my wife that my return to octopusthrower.com was going to be about how bad the Wings have been playing since the loss of Nic Kronwell. At the time, they were down 2-0 after 20 minutes to the St. Louis Blues, and  looked to be on their way to a third-straight shutout loss, which would have been the first time a Red Wing team had gone 180 straight minutes without a goal. However, like they have [...]

After suffering two losses to teams who reside below the Mason-Dixon Line, the Red Wings stars got the team back on track Saturday in a 3-2 shoot-out win against Montreal. Pav and Hank scored in the shoot out, while Jimmy Howard made a crucial save on Mike Cammalleri and had one shot hit the post in the tie breaker. Hank ended the game with a shot through the pads of Canadian goaltender Carey Price. Brad Stuart and Datsyuk both scored on powerplay goals in the first as Montreal could not stay out of hte sin bin. 1 2 3 4 and Good Luck Shanny

AUTHOR: | IN: Red Wings | COMMENTS: None Yet

As of late, the Red Wings have looked like the team of old, shuffling four lines on the ice with each unit able to produce quality minutes on both the offensive and defensive side of the puck. With the lack of depth Detroit is having to deal with for the first time in decades, veteran role players like Kris Draper and Kirk Maltby have been more heavily leaned on this season, and both have responded with three goals each and a +7 rating. However, it has been more than the mature vets who have made the Red Wings bottom lines more [...]

Hank the Tank serving up tricks and curly fries

AUTHOR: | IN: Red Wings | COMMENTS: 1 Comment

What goes best with Hot Wings? Well, if you ask Henrick Zetterberg, the answer might be three goals and a side of Arby’s curly fries. The Red Wing forward scored three goals as part of his five-point night for the Wings’ first hat trick of the season. The feat also gives fans around Michigan a free order of curly fries at participating Arby’s restaurant. For a team that was supposed to struggle on offense this season, the Wings have been doing everything but, scoring 19 goals in the last three games, including nine against Columbus on Wednesday in a 9-1 win [...]

Stinging the Blue Jackets

AUTHOR: | IN: Red Wings | COMMENTS: 2 Comments

What a win for the Red Wings. The roller coaster ride known as the Red Wings season hit a lift the size of the Millenium Force Wednesday night as the Wings, despite being with out three key players, stuck a pitch fork into the heart of Buckeye Country with a 9-1 win over the Central Division leading Blue Jackets. After an embarassing  loss the Toronto in their last game, Detroit looked focused and at motivated. I think they wanted to send a message to the rest of the Division and the NHL that even though they are banged up and [...]

Stevie Y in the Hall

AUTHOR: | IN: Red Wings | COMMENTS: None Yet

It was great to see No. 19 enshrined with the greatest players to ever lace up the skates Monday night as the Captain Steve Yzerman was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto. My favorite memories from Steve’s days as the Red Wing captain were of course those of playoff wins and Stanly Cup Championships. The one that sticks out  was back in 1996, when he scored In I believe it was double OT against the Blues in game seven of the Western Conference Semifinals. The shot from the circle that rang off the cross bar and into the [...]
