The best of times, no the worst of times

I know I have been supportive and tried to keep a positive outlook on the season over the last couple of weeks, but after allowing a struggling Oilers team to dominate for two periods like they did last night was almost too much to bear.

Look, bottom line is that the defense needs to toughen up and keep other teams from getting rebounds, but the goalies need to not allow the opposing offenses to control things in the defensive zone like they have.

The way Jimmy Howard’s night started was similar to how Osgood’s did in the win over Vancouver. One of these guys better show us that they can get the job done, or Ken Holland need to make a move to get a goalie that is actually going to make stops, or pull up this Daniel Larsson kid from Grand Rapids who is leading the Griffins to a 4-0 start (click on the link below to read the recap of last night’s win.

This is the worst I have seen the Wings play in about two decades, making this team look more like the Dead Wings of the 1970’s and 80’s (pre-Stevie Y). There have been so many shimmers of hope, like the third periods on Tuesday and Thursday nights, but Mike Babcock and the boys need to find a way to play that way for three periods.

Two years ago, we were talking about a possible rebirth of the Red Wing dynasty with Lord Stanley’s Cup pretty much taking up permanent residence in HockeyTown. Now I am just hoping that we get a shot at prying it away from those damn Penguins (led by the whinniest ‘Kid’ in the NHL).

Road trip ends tomorrow, hopfully some home cooking on Bud Lynch Night will be just what the doctor ordered.
